Description
We are all familiar with the 5.9-liter Cummins engine dowel pins. They are typically used to help locate and line up a housing-to-housing assembly. Such is the case with the Cummins 12-valve engines (and some early model 24-valve engines) where the gear case/timing cover assembles to the engine block. The dowel pin used in the Cummins engine can back out of its bore. When it does, it can fall into the camshaft gear and cause all types of expensive engine damage.
The folks at TST Products have developed a kit to cover the dowel pin and prevent its movement. The kit is inexpensive protection and includes:
- Killer Dowel Pin cover tab
- Timing cover seals
- RTV sealant for timing cover
**This kit does NOT include a new cover gasket, rather a tube of RTV sealant like Cummins used on later B engines in place of a gasket. If you want to use a gasket, order Cummins part number 3918673.

The instructions are superb. They go so far as to tell you what size socket or wrench to use for the step. Plan on having to modify a wrench to get the fan support bracket off, no big deal, but a regular width box wrench didn't work for me. Also I found it easier to remove the upper radiator hose to get the washer fluid tank out and just give me more room to work.I took most of a day to do it but I had to spend a couple hours driving to another shop to modify the 10mm wrench for the fan bracket. It wasn't bad to do and in my case I think it was worth doing just to reseal the cover if nothing else. Also, if you have a 1/2" drive breaker bar bar but not a 3/8"", as I did, just get an adapter to remove the fan belt. And while you're at it, get a new fan belt, put the old one behind the seat.

Installed the KDP Kit on my 1997 Dodge Cummins 12 valve with 328,000 miles. Easy to follow instructions. Installation of Front Crank Seal supplied is found to be a high quality part. After Install of the kit no worries about the dowel coming out, no oil leaks from the front cover!!

Good quality parts included, clear and complete instructions. I've installed several of these kits on different trucks and have no complaints, Geno's ships quick and keeps you informed if something is backordered.
Killer dowel pin fix
Sep 2, 2018 | By Marcel VanDorpe
My truck is layed up waiting on a seat repair . I read about this issue. I don't want it to be me with mine.
Geno's delivery was super fast . The job took about 3 hours. The dowel pin went in as we added the fix.
Thanks again and will buy here again !
3 down 1 to go!

We installed a kit on our 99 service truck, the pin was right where it should be.
Then we switched to my 97 12v and the pin was about half way out! (129k original)
Next up my Father in law's 97 12v, the pin was coming out (255k original)
We have one Cummins left in the family to do and that will take care of it.
Thank you for saving my engine (s)!
PS we pulled the radiator unlike the instructions said, we figured the hoses needed to be changed and prevented damage to the unit while were completing the task. Also a great opportunity to look at the AF and see how it was doing and if it needed a flush.
Awesome Kit!

Geno's knocks it out of the park with this kit. Completed the kit with the included instructions and now have peace of mind. Thank you!
