Description

We are all familiar with the 5.9-liter Cummins engine dowel pins in the '89-'93 and '98.5-'02 Dodge Turbo Diesel trucks. They are typically used to help locate and line up a housing-to-housing assembly. Such is the case with the Cummins 12-valve engines (and some early model 24-valve engines) where the gear case/timing cover assembles to the engine block.

The dowel pin used in the Cummins engine can back out of its bore. When it does, it can fall into the camshaft gear and cause all types of expensive engine damage.

The folks at TST Products have developed a kit to cover the dowel pin and prevent its movement. These year engines have a step, or shelf, between the tab retaining bolt, and the dowel pin. These kits come with a bent tab to accommodate the step.

The kit is inexpensive protection and includes:

  • Killer Dowel Pin cover tab
  • Timing cover seals
  • RTV sealant for timing cover
Unfortunately the labor involved to access the KDP and cover it with the cover tab is time consuming. However, clear instructions make it a job that the DIYer can handle. Read about dowel pin containment from TDR Issue 57. Click to open PDF (3 mg).

**This kit does NOT include a new cover gasket, rather a tube of RTV sealant like Cummins used on later B engines in place of a gasket. If you want to use a gasket on your '98.5-'02 truck, order Cummins part number 3918673.

The KDP kit had everything I needed for a good install on my '93 D250. Install instructions are very thorough and detailed. Customer service was great, I had one question and Robin went back and got my answer from a tech. in a few seconds.

93 Cummins

My kdp washer bend was not big enough bend to make it over the dowel step which caused the washer to not sit flush on the timing case. I had to chip at the flange in the timing case and cut a small portion of the washer off at the bend to get it to where I was comfortable. I would have gone with a different kit if I had known it would lead to the extra work. Would not have been that big of a deal but I did not fix it the first time and it kept bugging me. When I went back in the bolt was not backed out, but was definitely loose.

98-02 KDP kit

I purchased the KDP kit for my 2001 Ram 2500, I noticed when taking of my timing cover that I had the newer timing case that had a grove around the KDP to prevent it from coming out. So I did not need the KDP and it would not fit either way on the newer style case. Best pricing for the KDP kit regardless and needed to do my Crank seal so I guess it wasnt a pointless purchase.

Great product

KDP kit needed shimmed to work

I have a 93 12 valve I just recently purchased. I ordered this part and it arrived on time, the instructions were great. Very detailed. The only issue- my block had a ridge between the kdp and the bolt used to hold the small plate in place. I had to put a washer and lock washer behind the plate the shin it out far enough to seat properly. I don't know if this is a common issue with the earlier 12 valve trucks or just my block is different. Anyway it worked fine.

Almost everything you need

This kit is good and the instructions are good. I did order the timing cover gasket separately since reusing the old one or replacing the gasket with rtv didn't sound like a good idea. I think this gasket should be included in the kit. Be careful to install the main seal correctly with the plastic guard or you'll get a leak like I did(should have slowed down).

If you have an early '98.5 order both kits

I've an early '98.5 (ordered in Oct '97, got it Apr '98), and had ordered this kit. However, after I got the gear cover off, I found that the bolt hole and the dowel pin hole were on the same plane, so I needed the flat washer that comes in the other kit. Also, for some reason, the bolt on mine was not 10mm, but 7/16", though the threading was fine. So, if you've an early 24V like me, you might want to get both kits, and return the unused one, just so you don't get in there and have to stop and wait to get the other kit.
Owner Response:Thank you for your review. Although not common, we do periodically see trucks built near an engine changeover will have mismatched parts based off what was available during assembly. So 98.5 and 2002 Ram Cummins engines can be odd balls sometimes. The advise of purchasing both kits, or removing cover to determine what kit is needed is a good way to make sure you will have what is needed the first time around. The bent tab could also be hammered flat in this situation and will work just fine.
